Every new product starts with a problem. For the MDT DRT Chassis System, that problem was clear: no purpose-built rifle chassis combined the performance and adjustability of a competition system with the features serious night hunters needed. Lightweight hunting stocks, competition chassis, and rifles adapted for thermal and night vision all existed, but combining those capabilities usually meant compromising somewhere. Instead of adapting an existing hunting chassis by simply adding a night vision bridge, MDT set out to build a complete system from the ground up. The goal was a lightweight, rigid, highly adjustable chassis designed specifically for night hunting, incorporating the performance characteristics MDT refined through years of competition chassis development. The result is the MDT DRT Chassis System.
The project began with an experiment: What would happen if MDT took the industrial design and engineering lessons learned from the ACC Premier Gen 2 and pushed them in an entirely different direction? The goal was to create something lighter and stronger where it mattered, incorporate the mounting solutions required for thermal and night hunting, and retain the ergonomics and adjustability expected from a modern competition chassis—all without creating a specialized Chassis System built for only one job.

One of the first major experiments involved producing a chassis from magnesium. The results showed enough potential that what started as an experiment quickly grew into a serious development project. But changing the material was only the beginning. As the team built and tested prototypes, they began rethinking the chassis itself—lowering the bore axis, reinforcing flex-prone areas, and removing unnecessary material wherever possible. With each iteration, the design became lighter, stronger, and more refined. What began as an exploration of a new material was steadily evolving into an entirely new Chassis System.
Engineering simulations and controlled testing can tell you a lot about a rifle chassis, but they can't fully replicate what happens when that rifle is thrown into a truck, carried through rough country, shot from improvised positions, or used night after night in the field. To understand how the DRT would perform in the real world, MDT put prototypes into the hands of the people who would actually use them.

Professional hunters and guides tested the DRT in demanding predator-hunting environments, while additional prototypes were carried on hunts worldwide. Their feedback became an important part of the development process. Accuracy was only one piece of the equation. The team also evaluated how the rifle carried, where accessories naturally needed to be positioned, how easily shooters could manipulate the system, and whether the chassis remained intuitive to operate in complete darkness. Those details can seem small on a CAD screen, but at 2 a.m. behind a thermal optic, they become critical.
By the time the DRT appeared publicly at the 2026 SHOT Show, the basic concept was established—but the chassis still wasn't finished. One area that received significant attention was the folding mechanism. The team wanted the stock to fold over the bolt handle while remaining simple to operate. More importantly, they wanted the mechanism to feel like an integrated part of the chassis, not a folding adapter bolted onto the back of a rifle.
Feedback sent the engineers back to work. The folding system was redesigned so it could be adjusted and released with a single press, creating a cleaner, more seamless system. Then came another setback: a machine fire interrupted the final stages of production and pushed the project behind schedule. Development continued, however, and the DRT that emerged from that process represents years of engineering lessons condensed into one chassis.
Weight reduction is easy if you're willing to sacrifice enough material. Building something light that remains rigid, durable, and capable is considerably harder. The DRT approaches that challenge by using the right materials in the right places. An aluminum-magnesium alloy forms the chassis foundation, with titanium and carbon fiber incorporated where their properties make sense. Material is removed where it isn't needed and retained or reinforced where rigidity matters. The goal wasn't simply to build the lightest chassis possible—it was to eliminate unnecessary weight without sacrificing capability.

That philosophy carries through the rest of the DRT. Its one-piece, skeletonized aluminum night vision bridge integrates directly into the chassis rather than being treated as an add-on, providing a rigid mounting platform for thermal, night vision, and other electro-optics while incorporating a 13-inch 20 MOA forward cant rail for added mounting flexibility. The fore-end features a full-length RRS-spec dovetail (ARCA rail) machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and finished with Type III hard anodizing and Cerakote for durability under repeated clamping. Compatibility with both RRS Lock and ARCALOCK systems provides additional security when mounting to tripods and other support equipment, while M-LOK slots offer flexible mounting locations for lights, lasers, and other accessories. An offset five-inch rail adds another mounting option without forcing equipment onto the rifle's top.

Just as much attention went into the smaller details. A lockable magazine release helps prevent accidental magazine drops when carrying or manipulating the rifle in rough terrain, while an adjustable thumb shelf allows shooters to tailor their firing-hand position. The Gen 2 carbon fiber grip further improves ergonomics while helping keep overall weight down. Altogether, the DRT Chassis System weighs in at 3.2 pounds, keeping the platform light without sacrificing the rigidity, adjustability, and features expected from a full-featured precision rifle chassis.

The redesigned folding stock makes the rifle considerably more compact for transport, folding cleanly around the action and bolt handle while maintaining the rigid feel expected from a precision rifle chassis when deployed. No single feature defines the DRT. Instead, it's the way those features work together—reducing weight, improving adaptability, and giving shooters the mounting and adjustment options needed to configure the rifle for the task at hand.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the DRT's development is that it hasn't stayed within its original lane. The chassis was conceived around night hunting, but testing quickly demonstrated that the same characteristics that make a rifle effective at night—rigidity, modularity, manageable weight, recoil control, and accessory integration—also translate extremely well into competition. That is especially true in hunter-style matches and divisions where rifle weight matters.

Traditional competition chassis can provide exceptional stability and adjustability, but they can also carry a substantial weight penalty. Ultralight hunting stocks solve the weight problem but may give up some of the modularity and adjustability competition shooters want. The DRT sits between those worlds. It can carry the equipment required for a dedicated thermal hunting rifle, then transition into a lightweight competition or field rifle without fundamentally changing the system. That versatility wasn't necessarily the original objective, but it became one of the DRT's defining characteristics.
