The 7 Sherman Short Magnum continues to impress as a capable long-range hunting cartridge, and Piet put its performance on full display at Impact Shooting's latest range session. Armed with a rifle chambered in the cartridge and loaded with 184-grain projectiles traveling around 2,820 fps, Piet set out to engage steel at 827 meters and at an ambitious 1,057 meters. With only a few rounds available and cattle wandering near the targets, the outing combined careful shot placement with a healthy dose of confidence in both the rifle and its ballistic data. Let's take a look at his latest video.
Before sending rounds downrange, Piet verified distances with a Vortex Razor HD rangefinder using GeoBallistics, then cross-checked the data on his phone. Everything is linked via Vortex's Relay technology. A custom ballistic turret, built specifically for the rifle, handled elevation adjustments, while minor wind corrections accounted for a light crosswind. The first shot at 1,057 meters hit just below center, immediately confirming the rifle's potential. After adding three clicks of elevation, the next round struck almost perfectly in the center of an extremely small steel target measuring roughly 0.2 mils wide at that distance. The shooter noted that the elevation was essentially an educated estimate beyond the turret's original 1,000-meter calibration, making the precise impact even more impressive.

Piet then shifted to the 827-meter target (not the cattle), where the custom ballistic turret and data sheet continued to prove their value. Instead of relying on a ballistic app for every engagement, the system let him make quick elevation adjustments based on the known target distance—a practical advantage in hunting scenarios where every second counts. After a slight correction (.1 MIL), repeated impacts confirmed the setup's effectiveness. Even with cattle occasionally crossing in front of the steel, the rifle consistently connected once safe shooting lanes opened (no ribeyes for dinner this time…). Throughout the video, Piet praised the crisp TriggerTech trigger and the rifle's manageable recoil. He noted that while the 7 mm magnum-class cartridge delivers noticeable kick, it remains comfortable enough for confident follow-up shots. Plus, shooting with a suppressor helps.
Of course, this rifle should perform this well—it's built with some of the best components. The heart is a Stiller Wombat action mated to an IBI carbon barrel (this is a hunting rifle, after all). While the build is modern, Piet kept things classy with the attractive MDT TIMBR CORE chassis. The action's value and reliability quickly won the shooter over. Other components included a TriggerTech trigger, a Vortex Viper HD 5-25x56 riflescope, Vortex PRM Rings, the MDT CKYE-POD GEN3, and an APW Titanium Suppressor. The 7mm Sherman Short Magnum is a wildcat chambering that's gained popularity among hunters. Piet is a big fan of the Sherman cartridge series. After seeing how effective it is, I can see why.
Piet is one of my favorite YouTubers. He brings equal parts authenticity and valuable information to his channel. And you can tell it's all professionally done. I can't wait to see what he does next. For more videos like this, check out the Impact Shooting YouTube channel.
