As a left handed adult onset hunter, I found myself buying a 1st Gen Ruger American in .308, though a great first rifle, it’s not without its issues. After owning this rifle for a couple of years I had three issues with the rifle. A terrible magazine that caused all sorts of failure to feed issues, a forend that would flex and cause some real flyers, and a comb height that made my neck hurt.
There weren’t many options on the market for the left handed models, I was starting to look into buying a new rifle all together and selling off my Ruger.
Then I came across the MDT Field Stock IN LEFT HAND. I was stoked, I finally had one last attempt at keeping my first hunting rifle. I punched in my credit card info and poof, it showed up.
Excellent fit and finish on the stock, the tolerances on the bedding block were 10/10
I only had two issues with the stock - one was the room for the trigger adjustment set screw, I had to increase my tension for the adjustment for it to clear the bedding block.
The second and biggest issue is magazine compatibility. I haven’t tried an MDT branded AICS mag, maybe down the road I’ll order one of theirs. But as a ruger American owner, cheaper mags are what to expect lol
I found that a factory ruger AICS mag didn’t sit high enough for it to strip a round. But I blame this on Ruger not MDT. So I went to the store and bought a Magpul AICS short action 5 Round magazine. This one sat way too high and would actually drag on the bolt.
My cheap ass decided to take the magpul mag, a piece of glass, and some sandpaper and take material off the mag until the bolt cycled perfectly.
I guess that is more of a Magpul issue than an MDT issue, but it’s be nice if other AICS mags work as well!
But at the end of the day, my rifle cycles reliably, my stock is rigid, and the ergonomics are splendid.
Thanks MDT for making something for us lefties
