MDT Mentions – 40 Second Drill

MDT Mentions – 40 Second Drill

We all understand the importance of shooting, training, and improving our ability to be accurate and effective. Most of us struggle with knowing what to do when we head to the range and making the most of our time there. This informative video from our YouTube channel discusses one of our favorite shooting drills, the 40 Second Drill. In this drill, you are tasked with hitting a target at 500 yards from 3 shooting positions in 40 seconds. The exercise stresses target identification, building a solid position, and rapid target transitions.

The 40 Second Drill is a favorite amongst the MDT staff because it forces you to use your time efficiently and effectively moving from position to position. This is helpful for competition and out in the field hunting since you may only have a tiny window of opportunity to get effective rounds on target.

Our own Ryan McLean, who demonstrates the drill in the video, praises the 40 Second Drill because it lets you shake out your equipment and see what works best for you, whether it be strictly competition, hunting, or a blend of both.

As Ryan demonstrates in the video – in a simulated competitive setting – you want to move with purpose and speed between shooting positions yet not rush any given shot once you are in your stable position. Ryan achieved good splits between shots of roughly 10 seconds and seamlessly moved from position to position. Give this drill a try, and mix it up with different barriers and ancillary gear like tripods and "tactical tables."
