IMPACT SHOOTING - MDT LSS Gen3 Dream Rimfire Rifle

Shooting a precision 22 rimfire is an absolute blast. It’s also one of the best ways to introduce new shooters to the sport. Why? Rimfire ammo is affordable, recoil is minimal, and it’s relatively quiet—especially when you add a suppressor. Of course, there are levels to it. It could be as simple as a Ruger 10/22 right off the rack, all the way up to a full-on custom precision instrument. It’s the latter we tackle here. In a recent video, Piet of Impact Shooting dives into building his dream precision rimfire.

 

BUILDING A PURPOSE-DRIVEN RIMFIRE

In this video, Piet focuses on assembling a custom .22 LR precision rifle built around a Vudoo V-22 action and an MDT LSS Gen 3 chassis. From the outset, the focus is equal parts technical and practical—showing not only how the rifle comes together but also why each component matters in a modern rimfire setup intended for competition and precision shooting (NRL-22, PRS-22, or ELR-rimfire).

THE FOUNDATION: VUDOO PRECISION AND SMART DESIGN

At the heart of the build is a 22-inch Vudoo V-22 rimfire, equipped with a Timney trigger and a 60 MOA rail for dialing at distance. The action uses a controlled-round feed system designed to handle delicate rimfire cartridges without damaging the bullet during chambering (unlike the push-feed system used by the Remington 700). This is what makes the Vudoo V-22 one of the best and most popular out there (and yes, they are expensive). The platform also uses a Remington 700 footprint, providing broad compatibility with aftermarket chassis systems—one of the reasons it drops seamlessly into the LSS Gen 3.

ASSEMBLING THE LSS GEN 3

The build process walks through assembling the LSS Gen 3 in its tactical configuration, which mirrors the look and feel of the older ESS chassis (RIP). The build is straightforward: install the trigger guard (please do this first), build out the chassis (stock and forend), then drop in the barreled action. Pay close attention to torque—make sure to hit 65 in-lb on the action screws. And make sure the action is properly seated in the recoil lug.

Next, set the length of pull to ensure a proper fit. A few more tips: keep an eye on forend clearance during installation and avoid over-tightening the shorter screws. These tips will help you have a smooth build—and prevent any problems down the road.
