Brownells Quick Tip Assembling a Howa Rifle - MDT Mention

Brownells, Inc.’s YouTube Channel frequently posts information and product review videos for shooting and hunting equipment. Their YouTube channel published a video titled ‘Quick Tip: Howa Build With The MDT Field Stock.’ In this video, the host installs a Howa barreled action in an MDT Field Stock.

The host briefly overviews the MDT Field Stock, noting that the length-of-pull and cheek riser are adjustable. Sling studs are present at the front and rear of the stock, and a vertical grip is featured as well. The host emphasizes grip comfort when holding the chassis with both hands. Then, the MDT Field Stock’s aluminum bedding and AICS magazine well are shown.

Before the action is mounted, the metal block on the bottom of the receiver is removed to provide for the acceptance of AICS magazines. This is accomplished by removing two action screws and the internal magazine body. The two Howa action screws are set aside, and action screws provided with the stock replace them.

The host turns the stock right side up, drops the Howa action into it, and then turns it upside down. The rear and front action screws are hand-tightened, and the host uses a torque wrench to torque the action screws to spec after ensuring the back of the action’s lug is making contact with the chassis. This is important in limiting the possibility of the action moving within the chassis under harsh recoil and use over time.

Wrapping up, the rear of the rifles is clamped into a vice, and a Picatinny rail is mounted atop the Howa action using red loctite and a small torque wrench. A vortex optic is mounted on the newly installed rail, and the rifle is ready to be zeroed. The host mentions how easily he installed the MDT Field Stock on this action without needing a barrel vice, lathe, or headspace gauge.
