2WiLD Guns: A Budget Rifle in a Big Dog Chassis! Is This Overkill?

The MDT LSS GEN3 is a transformer for chassis systems. It can be easily adapted to fit any task at hand—which makes it a ton of fun for tinkerers like me. But what's even more fun is that it can be adapted to nearly any rifle. So far, MDT offers the base in 20 different inlets. So, if you want to take a basic Ruger American and go from a Prius to an F-250, you can. And that's exactly what Tony of 2WiLD Guns did in a recent video. Let's dive in.

A Modular Competition Chassis

The MDT LSS GEN3 Competition chassis system is designed to turn a wide range of bolt-action rifles into highly configurable precision platforms. Tony's review puts that versatility to the test with an unlikely host: a Ruger American Ranch with a 16-inch barrel. Tony already owns several MDT chassis, including the ACC Gen 2 on a Tikka and an XRS on a 308, but the new LSS GEN3 brings a more modular approach to the lineup. His build uses the long handguard, which measures 14.34 inches from the front to the recoil lug and provides enough clearance to tuck a suppressor partially underneath. The handguard accommodates barrels up to 1.25 inches in diameter, while the chassis itself is CNC-machined from 6061 aluminum and weighs 4.6 pounds.

The LSS GEN3 is available in black or FDE. Unlike some previous MDT configurations, this competition-oriented setup does not include a folding stock. The system uses AICS-compatible magazines. Tony uses a modified Magpul ACIS mag for 223/5.56 that has a slight curve, similar to standard AR-pattern magazines. The chassis is also available for a wide range of patterns, including Remington 700 short- and long-actions, Savage, Howa, Ruger American Gen 1 and Gen 2 rifles, and Tikka actions.

Built for Competition

The LSS GEN3's competition credentials become more apparent in its details. A wide, flat, barricade-friendly forend provides a stable surface against obstacles. At the same time, the integrated ARCA rail allows the bipod or other accessories to be positioned exactly where the shooter wants them. Tony paired the chassis with an MDT GRND-POD mounted via M-LOK. The system also features an ambidextrous magazine latch and accepts AR-15 grips, although Tony favors the MDT grip.

The stock is an SRS-X-Lite with adjustable length of pull and comb height, along with provisions for adding weights. On the lightweight 223/5.56 Ruger Ranch, the additional weight helps transform the factory rifle into a more stable shooting platform. Tony says the chassis dramatically reduces felt recoil and makes the rifle feel almost like shooting a .22 rimfire.

A Chassis You Can Build Your Way

Tony sees the LSS GEN3 primarily as a competition system for PRS, NRL, and precision rifle matches rather than a traditional hunting stock. Its modular design, however, gives shooters considerable freedom to configure the rifle around their needs. Users can choose between short and long handguards, different accessories and bipods, and a broad selection of compatible rifle footprints.

For Tony, installing a Ruger Ranch in the LSS GEN3 was partly an experiment. He already had MDT chassis on most of his other bolt-action rifles and wanted to see what would happen when an inexpensive rifle received a much more sophisticated chassis. The answer was simple: it worked. The combination retained the Ruger's lightweight character while adding the rigidity, adjustability, and accessory compatibility expected of a dedicated competition platform.

Final Thoughts

The LSS GEN3 Competitor chassis gives shooters a flexible way to turn anything from a basic Ruger Ranch to a heavy-barreled Remington 700 into a highly configurable precision rifle. It may be more chassis than a budget rifle needs, but that is also what makes the combination so interesting. For more videos like this, check out the 2WiLD Guns YouTube channel.
